Abstract

This study examined the relationship between quality of life and mental health problems of persons with disabilities at “Misrach Handicraft Training and Rehabilitation Center”. According to Verbunt, Pernot, and Smeets (2008), disability may affect quality of life domains and also leads to mental health problems. These findings may indicate the existence of a relationship between quality of life and mental health problems of person with disabilities. Consequently, this study focuses on the relationship between quality of life and mental health problems of persons with disabilities with a mixed method design. A stratified simple random sampling method was used to select the representative samples of 80 persons (45 males and 35 females) with disabilities. World Health Organization quality of life scale (WHOQOL-BREF) and Symptom check list 90 (SCL-90) were used to measure participant’s quality of life and mental health respectively. A cut off score of M ≥60 was used for the WHOQOL scale and a cut off score of M ≤0.9 and GSI≥ 0.5 was used for the SCL-90 scale to denote a good quality of life and good mental health respectively. The results show that the participants have a good quality of life and mental health status. Meanwhile, the mean scores of the WHOQOL scale and SCL- 90 scale showed a significant difference based on gender with female participants experiencing lower quality of life and higher mental health problems relative to the male participants indicating the existence of quality of life and mental health problems difference based on gender. Pearson product moment correlation analysis showed a significant but inverse relationship between quality of life and mental health problems of the participants with a value of r=.-451. And regression analysis showed that quality of life accounts for only 20% of the mental health problems reported by the participants which show that even though quality of life affects mental health, the majority (80%) of mental health problem suffered is due to factors other than quality of life.
