Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to investigate public toilet provision as an alternative for the employment of TVET graduates taking two Woredas from two Sub cities in Addis Ababa as case, The research methodology employed in this study was descriptive survey in which questionnaires and interviews were used as the main data collection instruments form the sample respondents- TVET trainees, TVET graduates and Woreda and Kebele administrators. A sample of 400 TVET trainees from Entoto and Misrak Poly Technique College, 100 Unemployed TVET graduates from Addis Ababa and 100 Woreda administrative personnel were involved in the study. Besides, relevant documents from library, governments’ offices, and private organizations were reviewed for additional information for the study. The findings of the study showed that the shortage of public toilet has contributed for the dirtiness of Addis Ababa. However, Addis Ababa, specifically Woreda 01 and Woreda 08 were characterized as open defecation areas. The major reason of this problem was inadequate effort made by the responsible administration and other relevant stakeholders. Also the findings of the study showed that the unemployment of TVET graduates in Addis Ababa has been increasing time to time. The reason for unemployment of TVET graduates were high competition for limited job vacancy, large number of graduates, few sectors in the country to accommodate the growing demand of graduates. Moreover, less involvement of stakeholders to support graduates to create their own job and the graduates’ perception towards low level jobs such as public toilet enterprise were some of the factors contributed for unemployment of graduates in Addis Ababa. From the findings, it was concluded that expanding public toilet services is very essential in which the administrative positions of the public toilet provision could be handled by TVET graduates. Thus, public toilet provision enterprise could be a viable alternative for curbing TVET graduates unemployment in Addis Ababa in which the graduates creates job opportunities for themselves and other unemployed people.
