Abstract

The main objective of this study was to find out the prevalence of psychological distress and its association with selected psycho-social and socio-demographic factors among secondary school teachers in Addis Ababa. To achieve the objective of this study, cross-sectional study design was employed. Data were collected from a sample of 238 governmental and private secondary school teachers (182 were male and 56 were female). The sample of the study was selected by using stratified random sampling technique. The required data were collected by using a pilot tested questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentage), zero-order correlation and multiple regression. The study revealed that the prevalence of psychological distress among secondary school teachers was 65.13% (20.17% suffered mild psychological distress, 20.59% moderate and the rest 24.37% severe psychological distress). Besides, this study indicated that there was no significant association between socio-demographic variables (respondents’ age, gender, salary and teachers years of teaching experience) and psychological distress. The study also found that there was significant association between psycho-social variables (self-esteem, job-satisfaction and stress) and psychological distress. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the Ministry of Education, school administrators and non-governmental organizations should work together to reduce the prevalence of psychological distress among secondary school teachers. In addition, school administrators should improve their leadership, management system, reduce teachers’ workload, create better training and development opportunities, promote accountability and involve teachers in decision making to enhance the wellbeing of teachers.
