Abstract
In this study an attempt was made to investigate theory-practice gaps in CBC in selected government secondary schools of Addis Ababa. In order to carry out this study the researcher has employed the descriptive survey method. The study was conducted in five selected government secondary schools in the three sub-cities of Addis Ababa. The three sub-cities and five schools were selected by using simple random sampling technique to actualize the research. The sources of data were questionnaire, interview, and focus group discussion and observation checklist. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted qualitatively and quantitatively by using descriptive phrases and frequency and percentage scores in serious of table respectively. In this study the majority of respondents have confirmed that, an effort made to relate theory with actual practice in CBC in their respective schools was very low. For these, shortage of well qualified and skilled teachers, lack of necessary supervision, lack of laboratory equipment and facilities, shortage of time, large class size, teachers’ lack of motivation and interest in practical experience, incompatible school environments, etc. were some of the barriers to relate theory with actual practice in the sample schools. As a result, teachers have given due emphases only on recall of facts and understanding contents. Based on the findings, to relate theory with actual practices and to raise the quality of education, suggestions for the possible solution are also recommended.
