Abstract

Improving the nurses working environment that influences their job satisfaction and the implication of the result for career counseling are worth noting. The aim of the study, therefore, was to assess the influences of work environment on job satisfaction of nurses in the Black Lion Specialized Hospital. The sampling procedure was stratified simple random probability sampling based on Education Qualification and Gender. The nurses working environment was measured by PES-NWI (Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index), that comprises of 23 items categorized in five factors sub scales: nursing foundation, staffing and resource adequacy, nurse-physician relations, nurses’ participation and leadership and support. In conducting this study, quantitative design was employed where primary data were collected from 200 nurses through four point scale Likert type questionnaire and descriptive and inferential analyses were applied. The result shows that majority of nurses in Black Lion Specialized Hospital are female students with bachelor’s degree qualification. More than half of the respondents are in the age range 30 and below years; are married and have service experience of2 to 5 years. More than half of the nurses report dissatisfaction with their overall job expressed by the prevailing working environment. All the working environment factors show statistically significant positive correlation coefficients. The regression analysis of these factors revealed that nursing foundation, staffing and resource adequacy and nurse-physician relations are found statistically significant in explaining the job satisfaction. The report concludes that the existing nursing work environment in BLSH is dissatisfactory. And moderate relationship exists between working environment factors and job satisfaction where nursing foundation, staffing and resource adequacy and nurse-physician relations are major factors influencing job satisfaction. Finally, it is recommended that the hospital’s management in general and human resource management in particular should work on enhancing the major factors to improve the job satisfaction of nurses for the ultimate success of health care improvement in the hospital.
