Abstract

Since depressive disorder contributes to about 6.5 percent of the diseases burden compared to other forms of mental disorders identified in Ethiopia, it needs the necessary attention from the concerned bodies. Thus, this research work was planned to make a comparative study on the Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Medication for Treating Patients with Major Depressive Disorders at Amanuel Hospital in Addis Ababa. To make the objective of this research practical, the researcher chose comparative research design. This research design allowed the researcher to make comparisons between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Medication and see the effectiveness of the one over the other in treating major depressive disorders. In doing this, the researcher used quantitative data and employed random sampling method to select the 40 patients for the research out of 51 depressed patients registered for treatments. And the researcher assigned the 40 patients into two groups. The one that had been made to contain 20 patients was a CBT group and the other was a medication group of 20 of which 2 patients finally dropped from the group. Finally, the result of the comparison indicated that CBT was effective in decreasing the level of depression of the patients over medications. And unsuitable patients’ perception about the effectiveness of CBT and lack of commitment to continue full session of the CBT were also found to be some of the most common challenges hindering the practice of CBT and medication. Thus, the necessary information need to be given to patients about CBT and medication procedures that they have to go through in order to make them free from depression disorder or minimize its impact. And capacity building trainings need to be given for the professionals at the hospital who handle patients with depression disorder and provide CBT. And further researches are also recommended to be conducted in order to be more effective in treating depressive disorder.
