Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the factors, types, sources and managements of conflict between secondary school teachers and administrators. It also looked into the different forms of conflict at individual, interpersonal, group and intergroup levels. In doing so, attempts were made to identify the types and causes of conflicts, conflict resolving mechanisms and the major roles of admins in the management of conflicts.Hence, the sample population used in the study consisted 45 randomly selected teachers and 15 administrators from three different high schools in Addis Ababa. The study showed that discrimination, resource scarcity, violation of school rules, failing to meet deadlines, authoritative type of management, absenteeism, communication problems, outdated rules and guidelines, bad work environment, and the incapability of admins to deal with conflicts were some of the common sources of conflicts which frequently occurred in secondary schools from both teachers and admins. In addition, forcing, compromising and avoiding were found to be the most frequently used techniques of managing conflict.In general the findings revealed that the majority of the admins lack the basic know how of managing conflicts. Teachers, on the other hand, appeared to show high resistance to change or to admit their weaknesses. Therefore, for the effectiveness of managing conflict processes and for the purpose of getting balanced views of conflicts, special training for both managers and teachers is recommen
