Abstract

Background: HIV/AIDS remains a global health problem. Young people (15-24 years of age) account for more than 45 percent of all new HIV infections worldwide. Since the HIV and AIDS pandemic began, the disease has been documented in more than 78 million and has caused 35 million deaths. Voluntary HIV counseling and testing (VCT) is one of the key strategies in the HIV/AIDS prevention and control programs. However, utilization of this service among youths of higher education is less investigated. Objective: To assess HIV VCT service utilization and associated factors among Gambella Teachers’ Education and Health Science College Students in Gambella Regional State, South West Ethiopia. Methodology: Cross sectional study design using quantitative method was employed from November 2016 to May 2017. A stratified proportionate random sampling method from each department of Gambella Teachers Education and Health Science College was applied to select the study units (students) until the desired total sample size of 354 is reached. Self administered questionnaire was used to collect data for estimation of VCT service utilization rate and associated factors. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify the associated factors. Odds ratio with 95% confidence interval and p values less than 0.05 were used to determine the strength of associations. Result: Of 343 Gambella Teachers’ Education and Health Science College Students participating in this study majority (73.5 %) were males and most of the respondents age ranged between 17-24 years old with the mean of 20.5 (SD + 1.8). The study revealed that 46.1% study participants have utilized HIV voluntary counseling and testing service. HIV VCT service utilization had positive association with educational stream (being health science), sex (being female), Marital status (had married), place of origin (being from rural), year of study, having boy/girlfriends, knowing someone who was infected with HIV or one who had died of AIDS, having pear groups who got VCT and encouraged them to utilize it. Conclusion: The 46.1% VCT service utilization and the factors identified in this study warrants targeted awareness and intervention.
