Abstract

The major objective of this study was to assess gender disparity in access to secondary schools in Arsi Robe Woreda. To achieve this, mixed method was used in three general secondary schools and one preparatory school which were selected using purposive sampling. From the sample secondary schools female students and teachers were selected using probability proportional type of sampling technique. The directors from sample secondary schools and woreda education officers were also nominated using purposive sampling method. The study included a total sample of 70 female students, 30 teachers, 4 directors and 3 woreda education officers. The primary data is collected from students and teachers through questionnaires and through interview from directors and woreda education officers. Secondary data was gathered from documents found in the Arsi Robe woreda education office. The data collected were organized thematically. Then the quantitative data was analyzed and interpreted by using tabulations, percentages and frequencies while qualitative data was analyzed using description. The analysis of documents indicates that even though the gender gap has been narrowed, still there exists gender disparity in access to secondary education in the study area. Based on the results of the analysis socio-cultural, familiar and school related factors such as negative parental and community attitude toward female’s education, early marriage and pregnancy, parents economic status, parents need for their females labor, school facilities and treatments, distance from school, female teachers in the school and gender based violence were considered as a reasons for low females' participation in secondary schools. Thus, it is recommended that Arsi Robe Woreda Education office in-collaboration with woreda women's affair office and woreda administrators ought to raise the issue of girls' education as a main concern of the woreda and thoroughly discuss with the community. Moreover, continuous community awareness should be done at the kebele level about the holistic advantage of females' education in the overall development endeavor
