Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the causes of teachers’ turnover of the GGSS of AA and to forward possible strategies to alleviate the problem. The study was carried out using descriptive survey design. Ten GGSS were selected and incorporated in the study using stratified sampling techniques. A total of 185 CT, 83 FT and 20 principals were included in the study by using random sampling technique for CT, available sampling technique for FT and availability sampling technique for principals. Data was gathered from teachers and principals by using questionnaire and interview respectively. Frequency, percentage, mean, and Rank order were used to analyze data collected through questionnaire and document review. While the data obtained from interview and open ended questions were analyzed qualitatively. The study unveiled that teachers’ turnover in the sample GGSS was 12% for the last five years. Further the result of the data analysis indicated teachers leave GGSS mainly due to inadequate salary and lack of benefits. Consequently, the remaining teachers were overloaded and were forced to teach subject other than their major field of study, instructional activities were disrupted and unqualified teachers were assigned as replacement; As a result, students did not get the proper guidance and knowledge that correspond with their level. Finally, improving salary and other fringe benefits, increasing administrative support were some of the possible strategies forwarded.
