Abstract

Focusing on leadership behaviours of principals, this study attempted to examine perceived leadership effectiveness of different types of schools through VAL-ED. The study used survey method to collect pertinent data. In doing so a standard questionnaire has been distributed to teachers, principals and supervisors in schools randomly selected for evaluating the effectiveness of principals’ leadership behaviours. From a total population of 250 supervisors, principals and teachers a sample of 77 was taken for the study. The VAL-ED questionnaire is designed to evaluate principals ‘perceived leadership behaviours from six distinct core components and six key processes in a matrix. Questionnaires distributed to a total of 77 teachers, supervisors and principals in selected schools in Addis Ababa, that were categorized as international and private for the primary purpose of result comparisons.. Based on the findings on the rating of six core components and key processes, recommendations were forwarded for improvements to focus on cells mean scores to improve school-centred leadership of principals for quality student learning and teachers’ instructional ability combined with a good curriculum in place for an efficient teaching learning process. Through analysing the data, the study reached to the conclusion that results on the six core components and key processes vary irrespective of the type of school under study. The schools regardless of their level and type have areas of improvement for a successful school leadership for academically and behaviourally successful students.
