Abstract

This study examined differences in self-concept between children in a family setting and those in institutional setting in Addis Abeba. The data were collected from 163 male and 194 female children aged between 10 and 18 years. The participants were selected using stratified random sampling technique from Kechene and Kolfe homes and Addis Ketema preparatory school. The data were gathered using Culture-free Self-Esteem Inventory II. Data from the quantitative survey were analyzed using Pearson correlation, independent samples t-test and one way ANOVA. The study found that there was statistically significant difference between double orphan in institution and single orphan in institution with their social self-concept. Results from independent samples t-test revealed that there was statistical significance difference between double orphan in the institutional and a family setting with their social self-concept. Similarly, the study found out that there was a statistical significant difference between children in intact family and single orphan children in a family setting with their academic self-concept. The study found out that there was statistical significant difference between children in intact family and single orphan children in family setting with their general self-concept. The study further found that there was no statistically significant difference between male and female orphans with their general self-concept. Results from Tucky analysis revealed that mean aggregate result indicates that SOF and CIF are better result in general self-concept of group difference. Finally, the study found out that there was statistically significant difference between double orphan in the institution and in a family setting with their academic selfconcept.Overall, the results demonstrated that while there were the social self-concept of the double orphan in institution are better than double orphan in a family, orphans were also better in their academic self-concept than non-orphans and similarly double orphan are better than single orphan in the academy. The family arrangement and place of living uniquely not different in male and female orphan.
