Abstract

This research was carried out to assess factors affecting job satisfaction among health professional in Dire Dawa Administration. The study used cross-sectional descriptive and employed both quantitative and qualitative methods to achieve the research objectives. A sample of 62 health professionals was conveniently drawn from five different healthcare professional categories. Self-administered structured questionnaires were used to collect data from the participants. And also, depth interviews conducted with two human resource managers, using slightly modified version of the same questionnaire. Data from the quantitative survey were analyzed using statistical software SPSS 20 with percentages, mean and standard deviation. The qualitative data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Hence, quantitative data reinforced by interpretation of qualitative survey. The results showed majority (46.4%) of healthcare workers are generally dissatisfied on their current job. Among healthcare providers, midwifes and laboratory professionals are somewhat satisfied. In contrary, general practitioners, nurses and pharmacy professionals are dissatisfied towards the overall surveyed job satisfaction factors. Variables such as; professional development, working environment and remuneration and compensation are significantly influencing job satisfaction. However, factors associated with job satisfaction are mostly staff relationship and general satisfaction. Also, there are statistical differences between job satisfaction scores and some demographic factors such as; age, marital status, working experience, level of education and part time work. Job satisfaction of healthcare workers will increase productivity as well as quality of health care service, as dissatisfied healthcare provider’s gives poor quality and less efficient care. In essence, it’s recommended that job satisfaction of health professionals should be recognized as a measure that has to be included in health service quality improvement programs. Therefore, interventions need to be implement, so as to address the job dissatisfaction of healthcare professionals, currently working at Dire Dawa public health facilities. Most importantly, the management should have develop and implement the regional motivation and retention strategy, with particular emphasis to improve professional development, working environment and salary and benefit job factors. Consequently, progress in the level of job satisfaction among healthcare professionals will enhance productivity, as well as eventually improves quality of healthcare service delivery at Dire Dawa public health facilities.
