Abstract

The purpose of this study was to see the level of stress and burnout among nurses in Black Lion Hospital and to see the association between socio demographic and work related characteristics of stress and burnout among nurses in BHL. The study was designed as quantitative. The participants (236) were selected from BLH in a proportional stratified sampling technique. For the purpose of gathering data, the instruments namely, demographic and work related questionnaires, Maslach Burnout Inventory Human service survey and Nursing Stress Scale were used. Accordingly, nurses in the study area were experiencing high level of stress. Result revealed that the most common stressors of nurses in the study area were: “Lack of drugs and equipments required for nursing care ,“Performing procedures that patients experiencing as painful/doing painful procedures on client,” and “when there is not enough staff to adequately cover unit Result also revealed that there is statistically significance between stress and monthly salary F (4,216) = 2.517, P= .042 (P<.05) and working shift F (3,217) = .2.989, P= .032(P<.05). Regarding burnout, out of the total of 221 respondents who completed the questionnaires the result revealed that high on Emotional Exhaustion (50.6%), Depersonalization (57.0%) and Low on personal accomplishment (71.5%). This implied that more than half of the nurses experienced burnout in the study area. In conclusion, nurses face high level of stress and burnout in Black Lion Hospital. Finally, the Hospital shall work a lot to address the work related contributing factors of stress and burnout.
