Abstract

The study was carried out with the aim of assessing factors that affect counseling services in both non-profit and for-profit counseling service providers. The sources of information to shade light on the sector were gained from counselors and clients of the two forms of counseling service providers. The method in which the participants were sampled based on non-probability sampling technique having a total sample of 153 clients and 17 counselors from both private and NGO sectors. The study had two separate tools to gather data from client and counselor participants. The instrument consisted of structured questionnaires having Likert Scales to measure participants’ perception and in-depth interview checklists. The data collection procedure, moreover, involved two phases through which data was gathered from clients receiving services in private (for-profit) organizations and NGOs (non-profit) and phase two involved the data collection from counselors. The analysis of data utilized SPSS v.20 to make descriptive statistics such as frequencies, cross tabulations and correlations. The results showed that there was similarity in the type of services delivered by both non-profit and for-profit organizations although differed in the types of client demographics. Furthermore, the factors that affect counseling services according to clients and counselors are the client’s attitude and knowledge, counselors’ background and skills, counseling relationship and counseling setting. Therefore, the study will lay the groundwork for future studies to be conducted in the provision of counseling services in non-governmental sectors and thus it will give insights on how to create link between counselors and the services.
