Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the psychosocial problems of orphaned children under the care of elderly guardians in Gulelle Sub City. The methods employed were qualitative research approach. Case study was conducted using four orphaned children. In depth interview and document analysis was specifically employed to generate data from the orphaned children. The data were presented in themes and analyzed qualitatively in a way that gives a meaningful link with the research questions. The findings suggested that orphaned children under the care of elderly guardians have faced different psychological problems. This included anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. Socially, they were subjected to various problems such as punishment, stigma, disparate treatment, self-isolation and poor communication. Besides, poverty, mistreatment, age and health problems of their elderly guardians were the main factors that attribute to the psychosocial problems of orphaned children cared by them. Thus, the provision of various psychosocial and economic supports to those orphan children and their guardians is the best mechanism to reduce their problems.
