Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the level of depression and counselling outcomes of HIV patients at St. Paul’s hospital millennium medical college. Survey was used to assess the counselling outcomes among depressed HIV patients at St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. Simple random sampling was used to select 100 study subjects and the data were analysed using SPSS 16.0 for windows. The total prevalence of depression among HIV patients was found to be 51% of which 14% was severe depression. The prevalence of male was 47.4% and that of female was found to be 52.6%. 35(92 %) were ever used substance. The level of stigma and discrimination the participants receiving were relatively low, i.e.28.9%. There exist a statistically significant difference in level of depression score before and after counselling (t=12.207, df=37, p<0.01). Sex, marital status and occupational status have significant correlation with venerability with depression (p<0.01). The overall prevalence rate of depression among HIV patients was found to be 51 % with prevalence of major depression 14% and counselling has significant effect on depression outcome. Even though; there were problems which hinder counselling services, there was also high demand for using counselling service but there were not trained psychologist assigned. The researcher also recommend that the research should be extended to include more subjects from different culture and geographical area, in order to use the results to develop program that are more effective in counselling services.
