Abstract

Context: To prevent reproductive health risks and control risky sexual behavior, information regarding Reproductive Health Risk and Sexual Behavior of adolescents who are at a noteworthy risk is needed by reproductive health planners. Objective: The major objective of this study is to investigate RH risk and SB among school adolescents. Method: A cross-sectional survey was made to achieve the objectives of this study. A sample of size 442 adolescents aged 15 – 19 years from MPHS was identified to fill the questionnaire. The collected data was coded, entered and cleaned in SPSS 15 software. Besides the uni-variate and bi-variate analysis, to determine the determinant factors of RH risk, a multivariate analysis that make use of logistic regression was used. Results: Among sexually active respondents (39.8 percent of males and 52.6 percent of females) about 74 percent of them have started sex before the age of 18 (early sex), and 53.1 percent of students had multiple sexual partners. Among 101 condom ever users during the last 12 months prior to the survey 74.1 percent of males and 88.4 percent of females did not use condom consistently (always) prior to the survey. All (100 percent) and 89.3 percent of the respondents heard about HIV/AIDS and RH risk, respectively. Even though the majority of the respondents have knowledge of RH risk, they were practicing risky sexual practice. Conclusion: This study indicated that significant proportions of respondents were experienced early sex, multiple sexual partners, and were not consistent user of condom. So, the study noted that the concerned bodies need to give attention to adolescents by having a strong, intensive and effective IEC to make adolescents protect themselves from RH risk.
