Abstract

Adolescents become sexually active at younger age. The socio-cultural, family atmosphere, individual life experience leads them to early onset of sexual activity. Therefore studying premarital sexual practice and knowledge of the risk of HIV and AIDS among school adolescents is an essential issue, which gives the information how young people are found in sexual related problems. The major objective of this study was to assess premarital sexual practice and knowledge of HIV and AIDS among school adolescents in Injibara town. Cross-sectional survey designs, which include quantitative data using self-administered questionnaire and qualitative data using focus group discussion was collected. The sampling technique employed for this study was multistage stratified sampling procedure. Data were collected from 812 school adolescents aged 15-19 years who are considered as adolescents in this study. The statistical tools that were used to analyze the data include descriptive statistics and multivarte analysis. Descriptive statistics used to describe the adolescents’ and parents’ background variables. The chi-square test was used to describe the association between the independent and dependent variables. Binary logistic regression model in multivarte analysis was used to analyze the effects of the explanatory variables on the adolescent premarital sexual practice. The study revealed that 20.2 percent of school adolescent had experienced premarital sex. The main reason for having sex was love affaires (67 percent) and peer pressure (26 percent). Among sexually active school adolescents only (38 percent) had ever used contraceptive, while (23 percent) used condom at first sexual intercourse. The finding of the study showed that adolescents who discuss with their mother about sex related issue were less likely to involve premarital sexual intercourse than those who have never discuss with their mother. The findings of this study show that adolescents were involve in sex at early ages and most of them did not use contraceptive methods. Based on these findings it is suggested that comprehensive sexual and reproductive health programs and strong information education communication are needed targeting adolescents’ sexual related problem.
