Abstract

Adolescents are the wheels of change than other segments of the society. In Dessie town, as in many other settings, the behaviors of the current cohort of adolescents will strongly influence the course of STDs including HIV/AIDS due to their risky sexual practices. The current study was targeted in identifying factors that promote risky sexual behavior of HSA in terms of unprotected premarital sexual activity with more than one sexual partner. This study is a cross-sectional survey research that was held from November, 2007 to May, 2008. A total of 823 HSA in the age group 14-19 were selected by multistage stratified sampling technique followed by SRS. A self-administered survey questionnaire and FGDs were used to collect the required data from the study participants. The collected data were edited, entered, cleaned and analyzed in univariate, bivariate and multivariate levels with SPSS version 13. The finding of this study indicated that, 27.3 percent of the study participants are sexually experienced. Of these, only 21 percent used condom consistently. On average sexually experienced students have more than one life time sexual partners (1.3 for males and 1.6 for females). Forty-one study participants ever had been contracted by STDs; 4 from regular sexual partner, 5 from prostitutes, 28 due to causal sex and 4 did not remember from whom they get. Furthermore, 11.6% of females and 13% of male students ever been/ever made pregnant. Pocket money, mother-adolescent communication, peer pressure, substance use and self-efficacy to resist sexual advance are associated with sexual behavior; pocket money, father-adolescent communication and condom use selfefficacy are among the stronger predictors of condom use consistency. The findings of this study provide justification for intervention targeting on key factors that promote adolescents’ risky sexual behavior. Providing the necessary knowledge and skills for both parents and adolescents, and comprehensive substance use cessation program are among the suggested recommendations
