Abstract
After one hundred years of Evangelisation in Malawi the current signs of the times in this country, the entire Africa and the whole world, is witnessing the hour of change mainly in the role of the Catholic Church (and also some Non- Catholic Churches) in the world. There seem to be a turning point in the Church towards "being witnesses of Christ" through integral evangelisation/development/liberation. Indeed many church groups including episcopal conferences down to the grassroots-level are striving to live the Christian faith in a way that the values permeate all the departments of people's lives: economic, political, social, cultural and religious where they act as catalysts. In Malawi from 1889 to 1991 this was not always the case. The Catholic Church confined herself to spiritual matters and in so doing played a very small role in the other spheres of life. The consequences of this approach to Evangelisation can be felt even today. The turning point for the Catholic Church, and as one Malawian bishops has said at the African synod of Bishops in Rome, "there is no going back", came only in 1992 with the Catholic Bishop's timely and historical Pastoral Letter. This pastoral letter and others that followed have indicated a new role of the Catholic Church in Malawi. The prophetic role of the Church which was hidden for over 100 years has come to the fore and even the country of Malawi has changed beyond recognition marked with the birth of democracy in a country that people since creation never had.
