Abstract

This study azms at exploring the extent to which each of the entrance criteria for the MA programs in the departments of CTPDS and EDPM correlate with the achievements at the MA level. The study employed a survey design and the number of participants were about 321 who were MA candidates in the last three years (2005106 - 2007108). A documentary analysis was used to collect the necessary data, which was analyzed using simple correlation and partial correlation. The findings showed that (1) the number of females in the programs was about 5%; (2) majority of the candidates for MA programs in the two departments were from languages, natural sciences and social sciences; and (3) both the MA entrance criteria (first degree CGPA and Entrance3 examination results) showed weak relationship with the MA first semester GPAs in these two departments. The contributions of BAI BSc area of study in first degree CGPA and entrance exam results to correlate with the MA GPA too varied from stream to stream. The conclusion was, therefore, the MA entrance criteria were not strong predictors of success in the MA programs of the two departments for which further investigation of the area, and consideration of other related factors like experience were recommended.
