Abstract

The Catholic Church came to Tanzania during the second half of the nineteenth century. In the early years she experienced many problems, especially from the Arabs, who by this time were dominant in the country. Other problems were caused by the environment, especially the tropical diseases, which affected the early missionaries. The missionaries did not despair in spite of all these difficulties. They carried on with their mission of preaching the Word of God and bringing civilization to the local people. The German government took over the administration of the country after the missionaries had come to Tanzania. The German rule was harsh and oppressive and this led to the discontent of the local population. In this situation the natives expected sympathy from the missionaries, but they could not get it. Instead they found out that the missionaries were somehow collaborating with the colonial rulers, this caused the reaction of the local people against the Church. Eventually, the local people in Southern Tanzania ' organized themselves into a mass movement in order to get rid of the oppressors. As they were fighting the colonial government, the Church was also affected.
