Abstract
A society that shapes its consciousness according to various scientific myths faces the AIDS pandemic in a spirit of despondency, and frames its response largely in terms of powerlessness. The myth that is born of a certain form of scientific consciousness in the area of medicine is that infectious diseases are largely a reality of the past; a reality that has been manipulated by a virtually completed technological campaign. The direct consequence of this medical myth is that the practice of medicine is understood narrowly in its curative moment, and perceived to be solely the activity of skilled technicians.
