Abstract

This study aims to assess the impact of refugees on security in Kenya, specifically Nairobi; in as far as the proliferation of small arms and light weapons is concerned. Moreover, the proliferation of small arms and light weapons continue to remain a threat to human and national security. This study therefore seeks to determine the link between the two in Nairobi in light of increased insecurity in the County. The research design used in the study was cross-sectional survey. Respondents were drawn from Pangani, Eastleigh and Kayole as well as government and nongovernmental organizations. The study revealed that while most of the respondents perceived refugees as threats to national and human security, responsible government agencies fail to provide statistics to back up this finding. This confirms the extent to which securitization of refugees influences not only government policy but also public opinion. This study recommends that the Government of Kenya strives to address the root causes of insecurity which include but are not limited to poverty and unemployment. Further, the study recommends that in order to deal with the problem of proliferation of small arms and light weapons the government should increase border security and take up the role of refugee status determination.
