Abstract

Rwandan society is made of three groups: Twa, Tutsi, and Hutu. These groups share the same language (kinyarwanda), share one traditional cult (Ryangombe), traditional practices like clothing styles, marriage rites, burial rituals, and other customary practices. Traditional Rwandan society was differentiated on the basis of social occupations. That is, the terms Hutu, Twa, and Tutsi signified each group's economic occupation: Hutu meant farmer, Twa craftsman and hunter, and Tutsi pastoralist. These groups, however, were not fixed. Rather, there was a social mobility where one could change his/her social and economic occupation. This change of social occupation automatically changed ones social status. Nevertheless, since 1959 wars and conflicts between the Hutu and Tutsi have characterized Rwandan society. The existing conflicts between the two groups have been interpreted as "ethnic" problems. These conflicts could be understood by tracing back the social-political and economic history of Rwanda, especially the limitation of social mobility which brought about the division of Rwandans into "tribal groups" regardless of ones economic occupation. The major concerns of this project are to trace out the origins of conflict among Rwandans, which led to the 1994 genocide and to suggest some possible solutions to the problems.
