Abstract
The United Nations declaration of human rights provoked an ardent debate on the universality of human rights. Thinkers from developing countries challenged the declaration as an exclusive expression of western culture. This debate, however, revealed that the disagreement is based more on the conceptualization of human rights than on the principles themselves. Today, though there are still problems in the conceptualization, virtually no one rejects the principles of human rights. The notion of human rights is accepted worldwide in relation to the ideal of the good society.
