Abstract

This thesis deals with the impact of Zimbabwe's war of liberation on the Tribal Trust Land population. The Shona word Chimurenga means anti-oppressive (maybe even revolutionary) war. The war of the 1970s was widely regarded by the population as a continuation of the anti-colonial rebellion of 1896/97. Therefore the liberation war was and is referred to as the Second Chimurenga; this historical understanding finds expression in numerous Chimurenga songs.The periodization of the Second Chimurenga is disputed in secondary literature. According to official historicalaccounts the war started in 1966 with the battle of Chinoyi. But the period between 1964 and 1972 was predominantly characterized by militant nationalism, isolated operations by conventional military units and acts of sabotage. The attack on the Altena farm in December 1972 finally started the Chimurenga after ZANU's Dare re Chimurenga (war council) had decided to change its tactics from employing conventional units to guerilla warfare.
