Abstract
Post colonial Africa has inherited a structure that looks at tradition and 'modern' as paradigms that are mutually exclusive. Modern has been made to appear as a model of progress and tradition has been made to imply archaic. Modern has been characterized as rational and liberated from myth. Tradition has been associated with superstition. A lot of attention has been paid to evolve towards the modern paradigm. There has, therefore, been efforts made to appear modern while suppressing deeply held cultural values. The formerly suppressed values have re-emerged in the so called modern structures and this in turn has created a missing link. Nyerere's method of Africanizing socialism, whereby he roots socialism in the traditional African society addresses the problem of the missing link. It is an attempt to link the so called tradition and modern.
