Abstract

"Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?" They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." -- Matthew 22: 19-21 Human beings exist in a socio-political environment which directly or indirectly has impact on their lives. The effects of this environment can be felt either individually or corporately (by social institutions) in the social, cultural, religious and/or political spheres. As a religious body, the Roman Catholic Church is affected corporately by her environment, while her members are affected individually. However, the Church understands herself as being more than just a body that is affected by the socio-political environment. Rather, she sees herself as an important social and political actor. Among the many roles that the Church has, one of them is to influence positively the political and social environment within which she exists. The Church sees herself as having the role of ensuring that people do not only render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God; but that they know the difference. People should know what rightfully belongs to Caesar, and what rightfully belongs to God. Caesar, the Church will argue, does not own everything.
