Abstract

Social media tools are changing the way people communicate, collaborate and interact in the day to day activities of employees of the organization especially in sharing tacit knowledge /or experience. They are used for capturing and sharing knowledge resources including experiences of organizations or individuals so that the dissemination or transfer of knowledge will be facilitated. This research work seeks to design communities of practice as the strategy for acquiring and sharing knowledge using one of the appropriate social media tools for government hospitals in Addis Ababa. A qualitative exploratory case study research design is selected to conduct this research. Structured interview, questionnaire survey and informal discussions were used to collect data that support the analysis. The result of data analysis shows that communities of practice is the best alternative of acquiring and sharing knowledge using electronic media to communicate with peer physicians. And E-mail contact as a necessary and efficient way to share ideas as the means of communication that paediatricians have with other paediatricians in the past.
