Abstract

It is widely acknowledged that ethical leadership is of great importance to schools. Behaving ethically is indeed an imperative for school principals. The purpose of this study was to explore ethical leadership practices of school principals in government secondary schools of Addis Ababa. For this purpose, five secondary school principals were selected for the study. The study employed descriptive survey design. Both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were also used. Accordingly, questionnaire was prepared and filled by teachers and vice principals. For the qualitative part, interview was conducted with school administrators. Data obtained through questionnaire was analyzed using statistical tools such as frequency and percentage and triangulated with the responses obtained through interview. Finally, findings of the study unveiled that the school principals were practicing ethics in their leadership. The finding also indicated that the school principals exhibited majority of ethical practices and behaviors in their leadership. According to the findings, however, they failed to demonstrate some ethical practices and behaviors. Most commonly, they failed to treat their staff members equally. Based on the findings, recommendations were made on encouraging the positive practices and building the capacity of the principals towards ethical practices in school leadership. The researcher believed school community and all concerned bodies of the education sector at all levels have a pivotal role in helping the principals to improve their ethical leadership practices in one or another way as these practices undoubtfully affect the educational process.
