Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the quality of distance learning materials. The researcher employed descriptive survey design. Simple random sampling was used to select respondents from four Universities (two public and two private universities), the distance learning materials to be assessed and the universities where the research to be conducted. Content analysis was employed as a main method in this investigation. Questionnaire and document analysis were used to collect the data. From 16 private and 5 public universities, four universities were selected using random sampling and purposive sampling respectively. From the population of 1410 distance learners 141 respondents were selected. The sample was taken from distance learners who were second year and above by lottery method. A single accounting module was selected from each university. The data gathered was organized in tables and analyzed using mean and percentages. Comparisons between public and private universities were made and analysis was constructed. The main findings in both private and public universities showed that distance learning materials are weak in almost all content elements of the modules. This indicated that modules of these universities did not fulfill the minimum standards that a good quality distance learning materials should contain. The finding of the research showed that the Language and illustrations of the modules of both Universities are weak. Selection and organization of contents in the modules of both Universities are also weak but Alpha University’s content selection and organization of the module is strong. Moreover, Bahirdar, Alpha and Admas University modules are strong in self-assessment questions, assignments and activities, but Jimma University’s module is strong only in self-assessment questions and activities. Furthermore, Jimma, Bahirdar and Admas University modules are weak in selection and organization of contents. The researcher recommended that modules should be written by trained module writers, inaddition to this, modules should be prepared not only by Authors and Editors but it also needs the participation of media specialists, graphic designers, computer experts, etc. Non-print media has to be integrated with print media in order to scale up the good quality of the module.
