Abstract
The general objective of this study was to examine the relationship between parenting behaviours and positive functioning among adolescents in Entoto Amba Secondary School in Addis Ababa and to explore the role of teachers and parents that could promote quality parenting and positive functioning. Parenting behaviours were measured by three behaviours: parental support, psychological control and behavioural control. Adolescent positive functioning was measured in two components: intrapersonal functioning (self-esteem ( Word to PDF Converter - Unregistered ) http://www.Word-to-PDF-Converter.netPARENTING BEHAVIOURS AND ADOLESCENT POSITIVE FUNCTIONING and empathy) and interpersonal functioning (social initiative and peer connection). Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to achieve the research objectives. The three groups of respondents were students, teachers and parents of the students. The participants were: 152 (70 male and 82 female) students of grade nine and 10 from randomly selected five sections of each grade on lottery method. Stratified sampling was employed to classify the students in their respective sexes and systematic random sampling was used to select the students who participate in the quantitative analysis. Three teachers and five parents of the students were selected using purposive sampling and participated in the qualitative analysis. A demographic questionnaire, parenting behaviours scale, adolescent positive functioning scale and semi-structured interview guide were administered. Data from the quantitative survey were analysed using frequency, percentages, t-test, and correlation. The qualitative data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Using mean split technique on the positive functioning scores of students, 72 (51.10 percent) had high positive functioning whereas 69 (48.90 percent) had low positive functioning. Results from Pearson correlation analysis revealed that parental support was significantly and positively related to interpersonal functioning. Parental psychological control is significantly and negatively associated with intrapersonal functioning in particular and adolescent positive functioning in general. T-test for group mean difference on age level revealed that students aged 14-16 were found to have a significantly higher positive functioning as compared to 17-20 age groups and T-test for group mean difference on parental support revealed that students aged 14-16 were found to have a significantly higher parental support and parental behavioural control as compared to 17-20 age groups. From the analysis of the qualitative data, open and positive communication, modelling of appropriate behaviours, connectedness, behavioural control, protection, provision and encouraging element of adolescent individuality from their teachers and parents were identified as the major themes that could promote positive functioning and quality parenting among adolescents.
