Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from absolute or relative lack of insulin secretion or insulin resistance by peripheral tissues. Diabetes mellitus and its complications continue to be one of the highest causes of morbidity and premature mortality in recent times. Many drugs are commercially available for use in the management of diabetes. However, their side effects and high costs underscore the need for herbal alternative drugs. Fenugreek is one of the medicinal plants which are important in the management of diabetes mellitus. Objective:The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of fenugreek seed powder solution on blood glucose level and lipid profile of newly diagnosed type II diabetic patients. Methodology: Study was conducted at Ayder Referral Hospital and Mekelle General Hospital located in Mekelle city. A total of 114 newly diagnosed type II diabetic patients were selected. They were grouped into two, group one treatment group (57) consumed 25 gm fenugreek seed powder solution orally twice a day for one month and the second group was control (57). In the study from the total 114 individuals, n= 95 were involved, 49 in treatment group and 46 in the control group Blood sample was collected from each participant by Medical Technologist/Technician before and after the study. Fasting blood glucose and lipid profile was analyzed by using Mindray BS 200E fully automated clinical Chemistry analyzer. Data entry and analysis was performed using SPSS version 20 statistical software. Data were presented as mean ± SD. A level of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result: Treatment group had significantly reduced fasting blood glucose level (P<0.001) compared with the baseline fasting blood glucose level, and the control group. Treatment group had also shows significantly lower (P < 0.001) TC, TG, and LDL-C and compared with their baseline level and control group, but showed significant higher HDL-C level. However, fasting blood glucose level and lipid profile levels in control group were not significantly changed. Conclusion: The present study showed that administration of fenugreek seed powder solution had pronounced effects in improving glucose and lipid metabolism in type II diabetic patients with no adverse effects.
