Abstract
Objective of the study:To estimate the incidence of puerperal fever and to determine the risk factors predisposing to puerperal fever Study design:facility based descriptive cross sectionalpostpartum surveillance Results:33/394 (8.4%) women were diagnosed with puerperal fever with rates of 10.8% following cesarean section and 4.1% following vaginal delivery. Independent risk factors for puerperal fever included operative delivery (AOR = 5.8, 95% CI1.02 - 28.30), rupture of membrane greater than 12 hours (AOR = 4.4, 95% CI1.15- 16.72), anemia (AOR = 5.6, 95% CI1.6 - 19.6)and postterm delivery (AOR = 6.7, 95% CI1.34 – 33.29). Conclusion and recommendation:Compared with previous studies, the incidence of puerperal fever was high. Efforts should be concentrated on preventing identified factors in the facility so as to drastically reduce the rate of puerperal fever.
