Abstract

Background:- Rapid population growth is of the prominent challenge of our planet. This major challenge is not equally shouldered by each nation. Developing countries are still suffering from the wave of unchecked population growth. Objective:-The purpose of the study was to assess factors influencing utilization of modern contraceptive method. Methods:-A case control study was conducted in Oromia Zone of Amhara national regional state. The zonal capital Kemissie is 325 Kms away from Addis Ababa to the north east of the country. Two hundred and ninety five registered modern contraceptive users (cases) from selected five health facilities and same numbers of women not using modern contraception (controls) visiting the same health facility for reasons other than family planning service were taken. Results:-Among the variables analyzed, religion, history of still birth and abortion, perceived economy when compared with neighbors; possession of television was not showed association with modern contraception use. On the other hand Amhara ethnicity, married women, housewives, secondary and above education had statistically significant association with modern contraception (P<0.05). Among economic variables analyzed average monthly income of above 500 birr was found to be statistically significant for modern contraceptive utilization (P<0.05). This study also found that modern contraception is more practiced when the decision about family planning is made by both couples and when they freely discuss on the matters of FP (P<0.05). Knowledge of FP methods and its benefit was relatively high among both users and non users. Recommendation:-Women empowerment through education and employment, awareness creation through IEC and especially using mass media message were recommended to increase modern contraceptive utilization.
