Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate Students Misbehavior and its Effect on the Teaching Learning Process in Akaki Kality Sub City. A descriptive survey research design was used to achieve the purpose of the study. The research sample was composed of 125 students and 45 teachers of the selected school in Akaki Kality sub city. These Samples were drawn from the total population using simple random sampling techniques. Moreover, the data gathering tools for this research were questionnaire, interview, focus group discussion and observation. Data collected using these instruments were analyzed using descriptive statistics (percentage and frequency). Besides, thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Finally, the study revealed that talking without permission, inattentiveness during class, failing to follow instructions, being disrespectful toward other students yet failing to assume responsibility for actions, failing to follow instructions and cheating on tests and in-class assignments are ranked as the third by the teachers. Besides, failing to do in-class assignments, failing to follow instructions and failing to assume responsibility for actions were the major types of misbehavior observed in the school. The findings of the study also revealed that lack of parental support, lack of interest and negative attitude as well as their inabilities to perform well/satisfactorily, inability to prepare, implement effective lesson planning, teacher’s failure to integrate methods and contents with abilities and needs of learners, inability of teachers to effectively communicate with some students, lack of administrative support/lack of follow-up and chat houses around the school were the major causes for the observed misbehavior of students in Akaki Kality sub city of Bulbula secondary and preparatory school. With regard to effects of students misbehavior the study revealed that poor academic achievement of students and destruction of school facilities were the major effects of students’ disruptive behavior. Therefore, it was recommended that school administration needs to establish effective communication channel with parents, involve pupils and teachers in the establishment and enforcement of rules at classroom. Moreover, teachers need to be good models to their students from the first day of the class.
