Abstract

Back ground: Health care workers (HCWs) are at risk of various work-related hazards in the health facilities, including infection from sharp injuries and contact with body fluids in there day to day activities. These problems become the main causes of morbidity and mortality among health care workers and hospitalized patients. To minimize this situation implementation of standard precautions is one of the strategies but, there is a suboptimal and inconsistent practice of standard precautions in the health care setting that increases the likelihood of acquiring risk from nosocomial infections. Objectives: the aim of this study was to assess standard precautions practice among health care workers and factors affect their practice in police health facilities, Addis Ababa. Methods: Institutional based cross- sectional study was conducted in police health facilities found in Addis Ababa to assess the standard precautions practice among health care workers, from March to April 2016. Data was collected using pre-tested questionnaire which was adapted from study done in Dire Dawa and Hareri region in 2010 on factors influencing occupational exposure of health care workers and the study done in Nigeria in 2009 on KAP of standard precaution among health care workers. A total of 281 health care workers were selected by simple random sampling technique from 15 health facilities. Descriptive statistics was applied to summarize characteristics of the study. Collected data was analyzed by using SPSS version 21.0. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were done, P- value less than 0.05 was set as statistically significant. Result: Out of all 264 only one third 93 (35.2%) of the HCWs had good practice of standard precautions. The HCWs who served 6-10 and 11-15 years had 7.5 and 19.88 times, practiced standard precaution procedure respectively than who served above 15 years. This study also found that, the odds of good practicing of standard precautions was higher by 1.98 times in the HCWs worked in referral hospital than those worked in clinic. Conclusion: There is a minimal and inconsistent practice of standard precautions practice among health care workers; can expose the HCWs for occupational hazards. Therefore, the health facilities shall integrate standard precautions practice with routine works and improving the provision of personal protective equipments and invest in hand hygiene facilities.
