Abstract

Obstetric fistula is a major health problem in developing countries especially in Sub- Sahara Africa. It is difficult to determine the number of women suffering in the world wide however it is estimated that more than two million girls and women world wide suffer from this problem. The main objective of this study is to investigate the socio-cultural cause and consequence of fistula using conventional hospital based survey method, both qualitative and quantitative data were collected in Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital. A total of 422 fistula patients, who are cam from different regions of the country are covered by this study. By using frequency and cross-tabulation the results found that about 94.6 of fistula patient were married and 59% suffer from the delivery caused the fistula before the age of 20. The mean ages at first marriage were 14.6. Concerning the Female Genital Mutilation and Abduction, 81.3% of the fistula patients were mutilated and 13.5% were married by coverage of Abduction and 3.5 are victims of sexual violence. 56% of them had deliver at home due to in accessibility of emergency obstetric care services. The study also showed that the consequence on labor lasting for 3.3 days in average and the result of prolonged labor. The majorities (90%) of the fistula patient have a problem of Vesico-Vagina Fistula and Recto-Vagina Fistula that account 5.5%. About 43% of fistula patients were already separated and divorce on arrival at the hospital. These conditions varied among women based on their relationship with their husband and awareness of the husband. There are different believes about the cause of fistula but 86. % of the patients believes it is due to prolonged labor. Hence, it is very crucial to give emphasis to strength the capacity of health care system in rural areas and eradication of early marriage by educating the society at large to mitigate the problem of fistula nationally.
