Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine and describe factors that impede the progress of trainees’ in Basketball skills development in selected youth projects of south region. To achieve this objective data were collected from male and female trainees, and coaches through questionnaires and interview. The data obtained from questionnaires were analyzed in terms of descriptive techniques. Data from interview were analyzed using narration. Findings revealed that the coaches have shown weakness in utilization of time and providing of facilities during practical sessions. They haven’t continuously provided practical sessions with demonstration of skills, assessment of trainees’ performance and managing of practices. The results also show that the coaches mainly have shown weakness in providing of tasks sequentially and they have faced difficulty in administering of trainings as intended in schedules. In addition to these, some of trainees have shown weakness in execution of level one fundamental skills; especially the execution of footwork and movement skills. Because of inappropriateness of trainees’ selection process, the trainees have shown limitation in progress of skills development during practical trainings. The concerned bodies should jointly work to provide trainings for coaches and sport experts, and they should support coaches related with how to administer the tasks in organized coaching environment. The coaches should give trainings in sequences and, follow the progress and weakness of trainees’ through assessments. Moreover, the coaches and sport experts should set requirements and measurements for appropriate selection of trainees. Immediate solutions would require the insufficient and inappropriateness of the training facilities.
