Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify and describe the traditional Harari baskets and their implication for the ethnic group. The raw materials, tools, weaving techniques, decorations and socio-cultural functions of Harari basketry were discussed. The data was collected from Harar by interviewing officials, intellectuals, basket makers and observation of the process of basket making starting from selection of raw materials, the dyeing process, weaving of basket to its final completion . The data show that there are thirty two important traditional types of basket. Their functions are categorized into utilitarian, decorative, ceremonial and spiritual. These baskets are considered as identity markers of Harari women, giving pride to their spouses and creating an aesthetic quality to their houses .
