Abstract

This single case study uses a narrative approach to explore the personal and spiritual experience of a woman diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. Previous to the diagnosis, this woman had completed the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. Through a process of naturalistic inquiry the study examines the self-narrative of this woman in order to discover the way these Spiritual Exercises assisted her to interpret her experience, construct her world and find meaning in her situation of advanced breast cancer. The data for this study was collected by way of tape-recorded, in-depth, unstructured interviews which took place over a six-month period. It has been written up in the form of a personal narrative and analysed using significant elements from the Spiritual Exercises. This study establishes that the Spiritual Exercises have had a formative place in this woman's life and they have assisted in her quest for meaning.
