Abstract

This thesis addresses the issue of rape in the Congo, specifically in the eastern Congo, where rape is being used as a weapon of war. It is a gender-based violence which affects women at the frontline. Their bodies are being used as a battleground with devastating consequences. Like a real weapon of massive destruction, rape in the Congo leaves indelible marks on women, on their families, and on the whole Congolese society. The situation on the ground is so complex that it requires appropriate and various responses. The political instability, and the persistence of armed conflicts, characterizing the Congo up to now, do not help at all to ensure a better future for women and all those affected by rape. Therefore, the major contribution of this thesis is that it addresses theologically the problem of rape in the Congo. How can we speak of hope and salvation in this context of total negation of human of life and dignity? Amid suffering and pain, the thesis dares to speak of hope. The suffering and pain inflected on women should not be justified and tolerated. Hope of salvation and liberation is only possible when the person is driven by a certain spirituality. That is why, the thesis suggests “Mystical-Political Spirituality” as a tool that can help the victims of rape, and all those affected, to rise and become agents of resistance and reconstruction. In this respect, the Church has an important role to play. In solidarity with the victims, the Church is called to bring hope in this age of despair. Despite rape, despair, wounds, suffering and death in the eastern Congo, seeds of hope are sown by the Church and by the people of good will who sacrifice their lives for human dignity, tolerance. and peace.
