Abstract

This study was aimed at examining the effectiveness of peer-tutoring method of learning physics in improving students’ achievement. The study also examines the perceptions of students towards the method. The study was quasi-experimental and was carried out in Burayu secondary school. Three grade 9 sections were conveniently selected to conduct the research. Among these three sections (section A) is entirely devoted to try out the level 3 peer-tutoring. In the other two classrooms (sections B & C) a blend of the level 2 and 1 peer-tutoring and the other teaching methods have been employed. Data gathering instruments are achievement tests. The experiment lasted for four weeks on grade 9 students who are drawn from the three classrooms. To determine the effectiveness of peer-tutoring on the student’s achievement, the significance of difference between the scores of groups at 0.05 levels was tested by applying t test. Data analysis revealed that three levels were almost equal in physics result at the beginning of the experiment. Comparison of mean post test scores of high achievers shows a significant difference between the three groups of the grade level. The same is true for low achiever students of three groups on post test. Hence, the result of the study indicated the effectiveness of the method for physics topics of Fluid pressure as compared to the other method. Furthermore, peer-tutoring seems to be more favorable for low achievers than high achievers. Concerning the perception of students, most students have positive insights about this method. It is recommended that the effectiveness of peer-tutoring method of learning physics should be intensively utilized to improve the low achievement of physics students in particular and science students in general.
