Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of Outcome-Based Training (OBT) in some selected TVET colleges. In view of this, the basic questions of the study were formulated and descriptive survey methods were employed to assess the current condition and overall performance of OBT. In this endeavor, data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The subjects of the study include 14 Management and administrative staffs (Dean, OBT Deputy Dean, Administrative and Finance, Registrar, Librarians Chief and Assistant, Accountant, Purchaser, Workshop Technician, and Vocational Counselor), 24 trainers, 112 trainees, Stratified sampling, purposive sampling and availability sampling were used to select the participants. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistic; (frequency percentage and mean value). The finding of the study revealed that the competences of trainers were low; the workshop materials, tools and equipment were inadequate. Accordingly, there was no adequate training up to the predefined performances stated in occupational standard (OS). Moreover, there was lack of on-job-training on difficult unit of competences within OS. Based on the major findings, it was concluded that the provision of OBT in the sample colleges had encountered a lot of hindering factors which world negatively affect the development of the required competencies for the world of work. Based on the findings and the conclusion drawn, it was recommended that the colleges should develop the needed infrastructure and facilities; they should provide the trainers short-term capacity building programs so that they can improve the implementation of OBT in the colleges. The TVET Agency of Addis Ababa should now continuously monitor the implementation of OBT in the colleges to ensure the quality of the training.
