Abstract

This research is an interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of the spirituality of women in difficult circumstances as an area of African religious expression, applying anthropological and sociological methodologies. It demonstrates how an underlying spirituality facilitates women's survival and struggle in difficult situations. The locus of the research is Bura-Tana, Kenya, an area severely affected ' by drought and the failure of a government irrigation scheme and where many different Kenyan ethnic groups reside. It considers women of various ages and ethnic groups. Women endure a very harsh life because of their concern for their children and their faith in God. Life is a gift for them, a sign of God's presence with them and concern for them. In the midst of their life in a physical, cultural and moral desert, the women reflect hope and the resilience of the human spirit.
