Abstract

The thesis seeks to establish causes of gender role reversal phenomenon that has resulted in the rural Kikuyu communities Kiambu, Muranga and Nyeri Counties in Kenya. It is a comparative study between the rural women in the three counties and aims to identify if gender empowerment specifically of women within the three counties has led the role reversal. The researcher used a cross-sectional research design and relied on primary data with the use of questionnaires and interview schedules and related literature from secondary data. The sample size consisted of 120; 43 male respondents and 77 female respondents from the 3 Counties. An additional 8 older respondents (4 women and 4 men) were interviewed to provide data on historical gender relations within the Kikuyu ethnic group. The research findings show that several factors say women empowerment, apathy from the men, and women’s collective decision-making, have contributed to the reversal of gender resulting in severe conflict. The selective empowerment of the women at the exclusion of men stands out as the key cause of the gender supremacy conflict within the Kikuyu communities. In light of this, this thesis highlights the need for gender equality and inclusivity in gender initiative programmes within the three counties. Various stakeholders ranging from the locals, the government, NGOs to religious institutions should find the work helpful in their efforts to bring socio- economic development in rural areas and promote peaceful coexistence.
