Abstract

The United Nations recognized the danger HIV and AIDS posed to the world when it declared it a threat to international peace in the year 2000. Africa has been adversely affected and currently holds the dubious record of having the highest population infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. The big challenge for Africa now is how to reduce the infection rates among the young people of ages 15-35 year olds. HIV has been used as a weapon in times of conflict as was seen in Rwanda during the genocide and the Democratic Republic of Congo intrastate conflict, and there are cases of refugees and displaced persons moving out of the conflict affected areas. Since movement in the world today has been made easier and state borders are quite porous, there is need for states to come together to fight the pandemic. Prevention through education has been cited by the United Nations as one of the ways that will help reduce infection. Kenya chose education as one of the ways to fight the pandemic and introduced HIV and AIDS education in schools. The teaching of the subject has been faced with challenges, from the cultures of communities towards sex education in relation to teaching the young people. Culture as Servaes (2003) observed has a big influence on sex education in communities and should be put in the picture. The magnitude and impact of HIV and AIDS is not only a major public health concern and development challenge, but has created a negative socio-economic impact everywhere. As states seek ways to fight the pandemic every aspect of life in communities should be considered for AIDS is not only a medical issue but also social issue.
