Abstract

Pro-social behavior is a behavior demonstrated by the actions such as helping, sharing, cooperating, volunteering, comforting for other, donating to charity, and self-sacrifice to save others. According to social science scholars the attitude and practice of pro-sociality got its root from the dominant ancient religious thoughts and doctrines. As many related literature stated pro-social behavior has some kind of correlation with age, gender and level of self-esteem of an individual. Accordingly this study aimed at investigating the relationship between age, gender and self-esteem with the pro-social behavior of the workers of the Ministry of Urban Development, Housing and Construction. To conduct the research, data were collected from 215 workers of the Ministry of Urban Development, Housing and Construction, from the sample respondents of the study 152 were males and 63 were females. The questionnaire for this study has three parts for demographic variable, self-esteem and pro-social behavior. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, frequencies and percentages), Pearson product moment correlation, and independent sample t-test. Based on the collected data for this investigation it was found that there was no a significant correlation between the respondent’s age and their level of pro-social behavior, women were found more pro-social than males, there was a significant correlation between the respondent’s level of selfesteem and pro-social behavior and it was also investigated a significant positive correlation between the respondents level of self-esteem and components of pro-social behavior. Finally it was recommended that acting pro-socially has benefit for both the actor and receiver of help either in tangible or non-tangible rewards, so it is the responsibility of all individuals to act prosocially and to make our world a better place to live in.
